3 Events That Changed Gambling History Forever

Gambling has been embedded into the life of human beings even before recorded history. Historians have found that the first six-sided dice was developed as far back as the Paleolithic period, specifically in Mesopotamia at around 3,000 B.C.

Today, gambling is a part of many cultures around the world, as most of these countries have made it a part of their yearly income. With that being said, we will be looking at notable events in gambling history that forever altered the games and culture as we know it.

Blackjack Was a European By-Product from the 1600’s

Blackjack has been one of the foremost casino games of all-time, and many gamblers have it as their go-to games whenever they play. But did you know that this famous game actually traces its roots back to the 1601 in Spain.

As noted in this historical account, Blackjack was an offshoot of a game then called “Ventiuna” (which meant 21 in Spanish), and it first appeared in famed author Don Quixote’s book entitled “Ronconete y Cortadillo.” It then evolved into the French’s version called “Vingt-et-un”, and when it reached American shores in the 1930’s, it was then named “blackjack”, when 10 to 1 odds were put up when a player had a black Jack of Spades or Clubs, along with an Ace of Spades.

This rule on the 10 to 1 odds no longer stands, but the name of the game managed to stay.

Poker’s Popularity Did Not Reach its Peak Until It Was Done Online

Poker is another game of choice by most casino goers. Given its fun and unpredictable nature, it has attracted most gamblers, male or female, young or old.

Recorded history states that Poker did come to prominence in the 1970’s in Las Vegas, but it apparently only took flight when it became playable online in 2005. The reason being is that for online poker, spectators can see the players’ hands, giving them an easier time to follow the games and enjoy them better.

This event once again proves how much of a game-changer digital and online technology is to society.

Italy is the birthplace of the First Casino

While the United States boasts the best casinos in the world today, this trend in gambling actually started in Europe. Specifically, it all began in Italy around the 1600s.

According to historical accounts, the first-ever casino that came to existence was built in Venice in 1638. Back then, their primary reason for doing so was to give the people a more controlled environment for gambling during their yearly carnival season.

Casinos then became a worldwide trend when the United States started building them in Las Vegas around the Great Depression era in the 1930’s. The rest, as they say it, is history.

We hope that this little trip down memory lane has somehow enriched your knowledge about gambling history, and how it relates to today’s practices.
